The Former President's Progressive Warning Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a misguided view of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an existential threat to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the situation. The true danger facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, about 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

The growing disparity stems from superior productivity growth in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a vital question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Experts widely agree it is essentially a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for major reforms.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
